This is a Hollywood rendition of American and Canadian stereo-types.....which means there is typically exaggerations emphasized. Many, if not most Commonwealth nations had "highland" units....along with Irish and copies of various English units etc. Scotland the Brave is a typical bagpipe tune and would not be uncommon to hear bands playing this. The American military has bagpipers.

Best entrance in a WW2 movie. Yeah, these Americans were outcasts, thieves, robbers etc. not wanted by the American army before this. As the Canadians were sharp, officer and a gentleman kind of guys, a force to be dealt with. Both groups became a special forces of sorts.

The town I live in is called Pictou (pron. Pick-toe) named by the Miqma natives, meaning Where the Gas comes out", perhaps because of the gas caused by the coal mines in the area. On May 9, 1992, our last mine, The Westray. blew up near New Glasgow, some 20 miles from here, killing 26 miners. It was the gas that caused the explosion. We no longer mine in Pictou County. In 1773, The Hector landed in Pictou Harbor, and Scottish settlement began. Pictou is the county seat, although New Glasgow is larger. I know that there were lands granted to veterans from Scotland after they retired in Scotland. My greatgrandfather was such a grantee for his military service. His land grant was in my mother's family until recently. His surname was Chisholm. Mom's mother was another Scot, surname MacDonald. The original John Chisholm and his wife, Janet, had 8 boys. They arrived here in 1821. My father's ancestry was French Acadian, his ancestor came over in 1664 from Poitou, France. He was a master carpenter and worked on the interiors of churches in Quebec before coming to Nova Scotia to work on the church in Louisbourg in 1701. He left NS in 1755 when the Acadians were expelled, and returned to Acadia after peace was declared, .He settled In New Brunswick, since he was refused entry to Acadia, and settled the Bathurst NB area. Our people scattered all over this area for work, or to be near family, It was the fishing that brought them to Pictou and parts of Cape Breton.

The Canadian soldier always wore Dress uniform during formal occasions. It didn't matter what the weather was like--they sweltered in the heat, froze in the cold, and endured the rain the best way they could. You asked about men not wearing Scottish uniforms. Are they possibly from other military units? The Canadians were sent to help train a group of Americans who were so badly needed for a special purpose they were recruited from the best of the worst (no insult intended) soldiers the Americans had available on short notice. They were troublemakers in their own units, to the point of having to fight or go to jail to serve out their time. They sure shaped up, as history, and the movie, proved. I am proud of what they did accomplish, no matter what their nationalities were. We can never repay our debt to them.

I come from a family with a very strong tradition of Canadian military service. In WW2, I had 5 uncles and one aunt who served, including two uncles who served in the Royal Canadian Artillery and landed at Juno on D+1. Another uncle was nearly killed when his Sherman tank was destroyed at the Melfa River action in Italy in May 1944. It was his first time in battle.

Well, I think every one would own at least 10 guns and our murder rate would be much higher. lol. Just joking. Seriously though, it would be much worse than that. There would be no Stanley Cup, hell, there wouldn't be any hockey at all. What would we do on Saturday nights?

This my friend is when we were all true Canadians, I remember it well, I am 78. Now we are so full of Immigrants and Migrants, thanks to our traitorous leadership all over the country. We are choking on these demanding monsters. They are in every business, health office, hospital, restaurants, government, grocery stores, cars and they do not know how or care to know how to drive properly. Many buy their licenses. Walking down the street or shopping, you hardly see yourself any longer. They own us and make demands. These are mostly Muslims and Indians (from India). This is how I will die, not seeing my own country any longer. My ancestry helped build this country, my grandfather started a newspaper that is still in operation. Then they went and fought, bled and died for our freedom and way of life. Where is that now. I feel so sad for what we have allowed to happen. What is wrong with the hearts of the leadership who are literally owned by them? What can we do? I know you have similar problems. Why do we not stand up and not accept this any longer???

To add to the earlier responses about the Canadian military and Scotland the Brave: you asked online why only some were kilted. The honour guard (with or without regimental standards) would always be in full dress uniform while the company troops would be in battle or duty gear without the web belts and other "going to battle" gear. This would have been a kind of "let's impress the crowds" uniform but not as dressed as their full dress uniform (all the troops in Scots affiliated units would have kilts as part of their kit). They likely marched from the not overly near train station.

The best weather is sunny, warm (20-25 C), dry, and with a light breeze that may be found on many spring and summer days on the Canadian prairies. Not a big fan of the humidity in the summer found in Ontario and really hate the dampness during the winter months. Dry air doesn't infiltrate your bones like cold damp air. Vancouver doesn't get cold very often, but bring an umbrella during the winter. The dampness can go right through your soul on the east coast. Bad weather in Canada is much like extremely cold winters, you just have to wait them out and then things get a whole lot nicer. Welcome to Canada. Born in Edmonton, but have now lived half my life in Ottawa.

That canal was how my Scottish ancestors got land in Canada. Worked on it in the military, and built their log cabins in 1831, which still stand today. Two brothers were neighbours on the Scott’s Line near Bobcaygeon, a road still named that today!

One of my great uncles was in the 10th battalion at Vimy Ridge. He was wounded, then MIA and presumed dead after the main battle. His name is on the Vimy Memorial in France. His brother was also in the 10th Battallion and killed in France by machine gun fire in an attack from Villers-de-Cagnicourt to Canal-du Nord in Sept 1918, and his grave is at the Dominion Cemetary in Pas de Calais, France. Both were from Edmonton, Alberta.
